Language

My linguistics lecturer today spoken of a word from the ancient Yaghan language. The language is no longer spoken as it comes from the Indigenous people of South America, (the Yaghan people).

The word was mamihlapinatapai: a look shared by two people each wishing that the other will offer something that they both desire but have been unwilling to suggest or offer themselves.

Basically when two people look at each other essentially knowing that they feel something for each other but are too scared to voice those feelings.

I just found it so fascinating that this ancient tribe had a word for this but we don’t.. guess it highlights the human condition really.
